Stress management is all about taking charge – no matter how stressful your life seems, there are steps you can take to relieve the pressure, beat brain fog and regain mind clarity.

The simple realization that you do indeed have control in your stress management is the foundation of managing it.

Step one in this process would be to identify the sources of stress in your life, specifically chronic stress, as it is this persistent kind of stress that is contributing significantly to brain fog.

Step two would be to decide how to deal with the stress.  The Mayo Clinic suggests you try the four A’s: Avoid, Alter, Accept or Adapt.

Other coping strategies could be to increase your level of activity.

While you’ll get the most benefit from regularly exercising for at least 30 minutes, it’s perfectly acceptable to build up your fitness level – that’s exactly what I did!

When I started working with a personal trainer, I could only do one push up – I kid you not!  Now I’m a regular Park Runner, and I love working out!

Exercising opens your blood vessels, gets your blood flowing and increases oxygen levels – all beneficial if you truly want to beat brain fog!

Choose a type of exercise that you enjoy doing – that way it is much easier to make it a habit than when you dread doing your chosen activity.

Connecting with friends was another stress buster for me.  There is simply nothing more calming than spending quality time with another human, someone you feel safe with and understands you as a person.

Shelley Taylor, Ph.D., a psychology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles completed a study that showed having a circle of friends actually provides an alternative to the traditional fight-or-flight response to stress, especially for women.  She dubbed this the “tend-and-befriend” response.

Next time you ditch your bookclub get-together (or make fun of your wife’s bookclub), just remember that these connections are what makes her less stressed, and therefore think more clearly!
