What causes hair thinning? Can it grow back?
Hair thinning is caused by various factors. Not all factors affect everyone the same. The most common causes (with some suggested solutions) are:
Have you been under stress lately? Stress is the biggest killer of our time. The rat-race for meeting all our demands before we go on leave leads to stress. This could be the cause of your thinning hair.
Solution: The best ways to reduce stress is by being in nature. Schedule in some me-time. Book in a head massage: this will not only de-stress you but also get the circulation going to those hair follicles (and this is great for regenerating your hair growth).
Our bodies go through a huge shift when we fall pregnant. Our hair is not excluded from this, unfortunately. Some women may experience hair thinning due to stress or shock, a condition called telogen effluvium, and it affects a small number of women during pregnancy.
Solution: The good news is that it will grow back soon after the baby is born (3-4 months) and your body has settled down again, hormone-wise. The condition is not serious enough to cause bald spots or permanent hair loss.
We all have to get older, yeah I know it is not fair. Apart from the wrinkles and saggy behind, we now have to put up with losing our pride and beauty. Grey hair can be embraced with a funky shorter hairstyle but thinning hair…just makes it harder to hide.
Solution: No, I don’t have directions to the fountain of youth, but proper diet and hair nourishment should help to slow down the process of thinning hair.
Sweat is the body’s cooling system. Exercise is great to get the blood and oxygen pumping but it does cause your body to sweat.
Solution: Ensure the scalp is kept clean by washing with a PH balanced shampoo. After swimming wash ensure the chlorine is washed out.
Iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction:
Many health issues cause hair loss but once the condition is managed the hair should grow back
Solution: Once again a balanced diet and supplements should speed up the process to recovery.
Prevention of hair loss and hair thinning is possible. Try to follow the natural route:
- Practice good hair hygiene.
- Wash with a pH balanced mild or herbal shampoo.
- Oiling your scalp and massaging to stimulate growth.
- Try not to have very tight traction hairstyles.
- A balanced diet, protein, and supplements.
- Regular exercise.
- Reduce stress.
