Top Natural Ways To Deal With Hair Loss

Elanya van Heerden

While the free market is currently working its collective fingers to the bone so that more billionaires can be birthed - erm, I mean in order to cure hair loss - people suffering from baldness are out there fumbling around in the dark for anything that could work.

The miracle cures for hair loss range from plausible (i.e. nutritional supplements), all the way to the more absurd (plucking one hair will make two more grow back - yeah right!). And even more frightening to know is the fact that people are willing to try almost anything to stop their hair loss.

Today, I want to share with you a few natural alternatives for dealing with your hair loss. I started implementing these tips a few months ago and I can already see a huge improvement in my hair health.

Hair being styled

A haircut that sits close to your head will disguise fine hair, or a lack of hair. I will never forget the day after I graduated from University, and I decided I had had enough of my fine, wispy hair - it simply had to go. (Full disclosure: my hair loss is due to medication, something I will have to continue using for my auto-immune disease.)

My hair dresser was quite surprised when I waltzed in, demanding a pixie hair cut - I had had shoulder length hair ever since I could remember, and Lynn (my hair dresser) had always tried to convince me to wear my hair shorter, but to no avail. She cut of my not-so-luscious locks that day, and I have never looked back!

Protein helps reduce hair loss

Another thing to consider, is a change in diet. Are you getting enough protein in your diet?

Hair is made up of protein. To get the optimal amount of protein, you need to include at least one of the following sources of protein in your diet: red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, mushrooms, lentils, kidney beans or tofu.

Although the animal sources of protein are higher quality sources, vegos can still get an adequate amount of protein in their diet by including the veggie options listed earlier. My family and I try to eat a variety of protein sources, and I can see a definite improvement in my hair health.

Other vitamins and minerals that play major roles in hair health are Calcium and Magnesium

Sesame seeds are a good source of these minerals. Not only do they contain calcium and magnesium, but they are also a good source of copper, manganese, iron, phosphorus, vitamin B1, zinc, molybdenum, selenium, and dietary fiber.

Adding a quarter cup of these wondrous seeds to your daily diet can do wonders for your hair health. Not sure how to use them in your cooking? Check out this post by Jamie Oliver, his recipes are simple and easy to follow so you have absolutely no reason not to try it out.

  Stress causes hair loss

Ever heard the saying, "don't lose your head"? That saying refers to hair!

No, not really. But seriously, I think it should be changed to "don't lose your hair"! When you are dealing with a lot of stress in your life, your hair will literally fall out.

Not managing your stress levels is a major contributor to hair loss, and if you do not take care of this issue, the problem will only get worse.

Girl showering

To slow down hair loss, alter your post-shower routine. I dry my hair gently with a towel rather than rubbing it vigorously. The use of a hair dryer is not recommended, but on the odd occasion that I want to style my hair, I use my hair dryer on it's lowest setting.

Scalp massage helps reduce hair loss

A regular scalp massage will benefit your follicles, as it can increase the blood circulation in your scalp. Rub in circular motions all over your scalp for at least 5 or 10 minutes every day.

When my children were younger they used to love giving me scalp massages. Now that they are teenagers, it is a rare occurrence - I wish I had appreciated them more, lol! Another benefit of scalp massage is that it can reduce the stress that may be a contributing factor in your hair loss.

Try implementing at least two of these tips today, and make it a regular habit. As soon as you have been using these tips and techniques for a solid two weeks, implement another tip / technique or two, and keep at it until it has become a habit.

Let me know how it goes, I'd love to hear your how you go!
